The Mushroom Hunter's Field Guide by: Alexander H Smith
Sold
out
The Mushroom Hunter's Field
Guide is the guide that tells when, where, and how to find delicious
edible mushrooms and how to avoid poisonous ones. Beginners as well as
experts will be able to identify mushrooms in a matter of minutes. All
of the mushrooms included are illustrated in color, adding visual
pleasure to the textual materials. The use of this guide is an enjoyable
and rewarding experience. The
Mushroom Hunter's Field Guide should be useful throughout the
United States and Canada, but users should remember that each region has
certain species typical to it and it is impossible to include all
species in any one book. The coverage is best for the Northeast, Great
Lakes region, Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest. It includes
fine edible wild mushrooms, whether they are rare or common. It also
includes unsafe ones in order that collectors may recognize them for
what they are.
Mushrooms
of Northwest North America by:
Helene M.E. Schalkwijk-Barendsen
$24.95
More
than 500 species of mushrooms found in the Pacific Northwest and western
Canada, from Manitoba to the Pacific Coast and from the Yukon to
California described and meticulously illustrated in full color.
The author: 'I'm not only the author but also the illustrator of
this book, which describes mushrooms I have found over many years of
collecting, mostly around our cabin at Sandy Lake (Alberta).
Since the late '60s I have been taking my paints, easel and boards into
the woods. When I spotted a mushroom new to me, I sat down and painted
it in its own environment, always life size. When the painting was
finished I collected a few of the mushrooms in different stages of
development, and used them back at home to record further details in my
sketchbook and to prepare dried specimens to send to several academic
contacts who used them in their research. I have found species numbering in the thousands over the years. I have a
background in botany, so I was familiar with classification systems. The
classification of fungi changes quite a bit as knowledge advances, and I
have developed a bookkeeping system based on card files and my
sketchbooks to keep track of what I've found and where it fits.

Wetland
Plants of Oregon and Washington by: B.J. Guard
Sold
out
This highly illustrated and
colorful wetland manual is meant for botanists, environmentalists,
managers and "all who appreciate, enjoy, study, protect and manage
the wetlands" of the Pacific Northwest. It details 155 (mainly
flowering) plants, but treats about 330 species in various ways, such as
being described as "look-alike" species. It includes native
and exotic species. The author uses five identification keys:
"pondweeds and others", grasses, rushes, sedges, and willows
(Salix spp.). In addition to the keys, the plants are arranged in the
book according to general habitats, including "submerged and
floating, marshy shore, prairie wetland, shrub swamp and wooded
wetland" communities. The color photographs and line drawings of
the plants are very good. Each plant is described as to growth habit,
leaves, flowers, fruits, habitat, natural history, similar species and
special notes of interest.
